This is a Video of Greg Howard, a Chapman Stick user. Playing and explaining the Chapman Stick. The Chapman Stick was created by Emmett Chapman. It's sorta like a keyboard + Guitar. It isn't a very well known instrument and only used by a few artists.

You wouldn't need one of these if you just had a regular band with a guitarist, bassist and drummer, but for smaller arrangements it could be cool. I saw a two-man Vaudeville act where the guitarist was trying to do a lot of the same stuff -- incorporate basslines while playing rhythm guitar -- but on a regular guitar. This would be perfect for those guys.
I wouldn't have a use for it personally, and I think the sound on the clean channels is watery in the video, but that demonstration of the distorted and undistorted channels toward the end was really cool.
I can't imagine it would *really* be like a piano, as he says in the video, though. With a piano you aren't worried about bends and trills with one hand and slap bass with the other. THAT definitely has to be hard to do. |

This is not a chapman stick, as they are only bass oriented instruments, one stick player that is famous is tony levin.
this is a TapTouch guitar, as made by various luthiers now, but the leading luthier IMO has to be Mark Warr - www.warrguitars.com
the sound of these isnt given justice in a video. but beleive me, it will rock every fuckin guitar ever made, as they really are built by hand, one by one, and cost a shitload of money.
notorious warr players : Bill Burke - Trey Gunn from King Crimson.
and you can do bends and stuff with a piano, but this isnt really like playing a piano , since when you play with a piano you only have to worry about horizontal playing. with these instruments you gotta think about up and down (low strings to high strings ) plus the horizontal (bottom of the neck to the upper neck close to the body) |
