| You're right. It is impossible. The areas of all the pieces are less than the area of the square it's going in. Can't be done. |

It works. They dont fit in the square exactly...the edges of the outer square are empty. Basically the square is turned to be a diamond.  |

It is not impossible, you just need to fit all of the pieces in. There will be a small open triangle in each corner. It makes an octagon, but the sides are not all equal.
hint: Turn the blue square so it is a diamond, it goes in the center. |
