Hmmm... Well correct me if im wrong but the real chaos started when THE god you speak of was made known to mankind some 2000 years ago, and was actually invented by a handfull of arameics. And they weren't even original in their concept when comparing christianity with any other religion in the same area... Well before GOD was made known as i said, there were sure wars and religious disagreements. But there were no crusades, people weren't burnt at the stake, there were no excommunications and people weren't forced to believe in god. Back in the old days of say. Rome, people were left to believe freely as they wished. It was believed back then that everyone was responsible for their own lives, actions and afterlife, so it was really up to the individual to say..Make their own beds.
It was the same thing up here amongst the "heathens". The vikings were amongst the most tolerant people to all religions, some of them spook arabic, latin, greek and other languages as they were mainly traders. It was the christians that taught people that they were illiterate idiots.
Actually it wasen't until Alfred the great christianised people by force (Choose god or death) in central europe that vikings started to pillage and burn christian places. What comes around goes around as the saying goes.. Personally im pretty damn proud of coming from that background with people that rather took up arms and kept fighting for 2-300 years, rather than to subject to some damn loons who wanted to control them and the world (which actually happened more or less).
SURE the church and christians has changed today haven't they ? , only because they had to, thank go .. uhm, i mean thanks to science and intellectuals who managed to finally help mankind along in reasoning .. I might point out, that the brighter minds who secretly questioned the existence of god, were only able to work as long as the church knew all about what they were doing. Da vinci, copernicus etc. Where would the world been today in terms of technology if that damn church had not been in the way of progress ?... God.. bah.. Before that figment of imagination came along, the greeks who also were "godless savages" had already made discoveries and theories of universe that we know is accurate these modern days. It was knowledge that were mysteriously forgotten about during the much deserved name in history called "the dark days".. And they truly were...
It wasen't until the 1800's that people became somewhat free from the whole damn charade of the church. Personally i would say that the Americans are mostly to thank for that. When they founded their nation, they had this whole concept going of personal freedom and equality amongst men, which directly and/or indirectly affected europe as well.
Something else that pisses me off to no end, are when religious people are always going on about how the past is past when you talk of all the unknown millions who died as a result of that religion... Just take a look at where the fucking thing came from and under what circumstances it began. That's all im saying.
Christianity is a relatively new form of religion in mankinds history of various religions, one which came out from jerusalem and those areas as everyone knows... And when ?..
Well if it didn't happen to be during a time when the romans were occupying that particular area where it was created... And this is something that bugs me by the way..
If jesus, god and christianity, who just happened to suddenly emerge about 2000 years ago, went and became known amongst people of the world by publicity, and believers who passed the word and it's belief on.. HOW the fuck could he create a world with life and everything in it, and then skip the age of the dinosaurs, paleolitic, neolithic, the copper and bronze age.. before deciding that NOW is a good time to appear. You shalt have no false gods besides me .. And people have done just great if not better thousands of years believing in other gods and spirits.. Just look at the american indians before that was fucked up by.. christians. Heathens all over again, whilst going on about how much they love everyone and everything... @ irony and bullshit... Well... It makes you kind of frustrated that people who claim to believe in him hasen't really thought of that little detail a thousand years ago, and saved us the trouble of having to draw pictures and explaining it to modern man in the 21st century.
The funny thing is after all the history i have read, when it comes to vikings they are the perfect example of a people who were truly free, and i mean free in it's truest form. Noone held them down, man and woman were both free and equal, everyone were free to believe and say what they wanted, people of different religions were greeted openly and given the same hospitality as everyone else. "Free man" was just that, a free man. Sucked if you weren't, but that's an entirely different story. The american concept was pretty much how i used to look up here before the strict religious fuckers messed things up as they always have.

Now, in reply to your deep analysis, it appears that your concept of religion & beliefs are exactly the same as my swedish colleagues from work (as you may have guessed). we have talked about it few times and they come to the same conclusions: the world would be a better place if they weren't any religion. I say, I respect your opinion but that's not the way it is. I personnally would never impose my belief to anyone. I expect the same from the other ones too.
Also, it's pretty easy to blame God on every tragedy, war, injustice, etc...It's the human kind who does all of that not Him. It's worse when they commit horrific things under his name, then you tend not believe in God anymore or you eventually turn yourself against Him. Naturally, I don't have all the answers. All I know, is that God exists and there is a life after this physical life. The rest is about your faith. You do have one or you don't. The most important is not to impose it to others. Especially by using force. That's not good.
